Standish Crossroads changes to light squence

It is well highlighted that there is a major congestion at the traffic lights in the centre of Standish. We have had two deaths over time at this area and it has been a problem that the Council would like to address.

Some time ago the Council introduced an all stop for traffic. This allowed the pedestrians crossings to go on green, so this was safer for them. However this brought large delays to the road traffic. This was because of the changes in the number of sequences. Currently, there are four sequences, The first is the on from Preston Road, Second is the one from High Street, Third from school Lane and then finally the fourth from Market Street. So when the Council introduced the fifth one, the all red, this was what created the back log.

So this wasn't the answer, so they completed a traffic survey and some more modelling. The result is  some time in the future the Council will try a new set off sequences. These will be, first from Preston Rd, Second from High Str, Third will be Market St and School Lane together and the fourth will be an all red. This will allow safer crossing for people.

The Council are confident that it will not effect the movement of traffic. I have asked that if the Council are going to a=carry this trial out to start it before the school's go back. This will allow people to get used to the sequences.

  3. I can certainly understand the two comments above. It will be interesting to see if these changes work. One thing he Council has said that if they will only change them back after a trial period of about a month.

  4. It seems the light sequence has changed now. I was told by a friend that they had to wait as it was difficult to turn right onto Preston Road from Market street and only one car managed to get through the lights. Also it was difficult to see the on coming traffic from school street.
This was a quiet Sunday afternoon. So I agree with the above comment it will cause chaos.
This will not stop people turning the wrong way at the traffic lights.

  5. Who in their right mind has thought this would work. I went through this morning (Sunday) , turning from Market st onto Preston rd, I was the only car that got through, it is dangerous and certainly will not help the flow of traffic. PLEASE USE YOUR COMMON SENSE!!!!

  6. 3 near misses today alone the road is not wide enough to cater for both sets of lights in one go it would need to be as big add the junction at beechill and it's no where near

  7. I've witnessed three near-misses in just the past two hours. Whoever thought this would work? There'll be an accident before the day's out, I can guarantee.

  8. I can't believe that anybody in their right mind would think that this change to the lighting sequence would ease congestion in Standish. I drove through yesterday afternoon and the number of cars that can safely turn right either towards Wigan or Preston can be counted using the fingers on one hand. What has happened to common sense? The only benefit I can see is that it will push congestion beyond what is already an intolerable level such that any applications for future housing must be rejected!!!!!!!!!

  9. This is an absolutely crazy way of operating these lights. Just another badly planned traffic measure from the council. Came through tonight and once 2 or 3 cars are turning right out of Market Street you can't see to safely turn right out of School Lane. I hope I am wrong but it won't go a week without a major accident. As an aside once traffic is back to normal the queues from the motorway will be horrendous. Do any councillors actually drive around the borough?

  10. i think this is the worse idea EVER. Yesterday, Sunday, it took me 40 minutes to get from britannia hotel through the lights. Today during peak traffic coming from the motor way, i was the only car to travel through the traffic lights, this is ridiculous. The two cars behind myself where indicating in right, and no one behind could even go straight on. This is just ridiculous, at peek time to allow one car to travel through the lights onto market street.

  11. OMG, who in their right minds would think up a traffic light scheme that now involves playing a game of chicken with the oncoming traffic!!! Perhaps the men/women in the hi-viz vests, who have been hanging around Standish with their clipboards every few weeks counting the different colour of cars (because they’ve obviously not been doing anything relating to traffic flow) would have their time better spent actually at the lights directing traffic!!!
